The Total Environment Centre has today challenged the NSW Government to come clean over how it benefits from raising power prices and end the misinformation in its response to IPART’s announcement of price rises for NSW electricity consumers in 2012-13.

Total Environment Centre (TEC) is today lodging a formal complaint to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) about a blatant attempt to blame rising electricity prices on the carbon tax, for commercial gain.

NSW government, NEM and Newspoll on energy costs and efficiency

TEC today welcomed the NSW Government’s admission that electricity networks are gold-plating the transmission system in order to boost their revenue, but called for more action to reduce spiraling price rises with the release of a Newspoll showing:

  • Almost all respondents (96%) think electricity prices will increase in the next few years, with the majority of them (78%) thinking they will increase a lot;
  • “Energy suppliers increasing their profits” was most commonly selected as the major reason why electricity prices are increasing (64%), followed by implementing the Federal Government’s carbon tax (59%).
  • 80% say they could reduce their household electricity use by being more efficient.
