The destruction of our oceanic ecosystems by plastic pollution is a terrifying problem – but we can fix it. We have the solutions, but we must move fast. As micro-plastics move up the food chain, and onto our dinner plates a ‘major health crisis’ is upon us. We have the solutions. The bipartisan 2016 Senate Inquiry report contains several dozen recommendations which endorse them.
Change is happening!
TEC leads and hosts the Boomerang Alliance of over 40 groups, which have adopted the goal of reducing the amount of plastic entering the oceans from Australia by 70% by 2020. We’ve already succeeded in convincing NSW and QLD to implement container deposit schemes (plastic bottles are a major source of this pollution). Now we are working towards plastic bag bans and action on factory waste. We are also developing a National Threat Abatement Plan. We have built the Ocean Action Pod, a mobile multi-media engagement program about marine plastic pollution which has been a big hit with schools and coastal communities.
What You Can Do:
- Book the Pod! The Ocean Action Pod is a pop-up multimedia educational experience that has been created by the Total Environment Centre to engage both adults and children with the growing problem of plastic pollution.
- Go to the Boomerang Alliance website for fact sheets, blogs, updates and actions.
