Right-To-Know

Access to clean air, water and food is a basic right for everybody. But when pollution contaminates these - it is chemical trespass. To reduce the risk of being exposed to pesticides individuals should be notified as to when, where and what pesticides are being applied in their area. Notification can help individuals to make informed choices about avoiding pesticides, and negotiating arrangements for better spraying times and alternative treatments.

TEC has been working with government and other stakeholders to develop notification regulations to help people avoid contamination. Leading US environmental and health groups have released reports that have shown human bodies are contaminated with a wide range of dangerous chemicals including pesticides, industrial chemicals and dioxins. Similar levels would be expected in Australians.

The first regulation enacted has been in New South Wales and applies to public places; sensitive sites adjacent to public spaces and common areas shared by residents.
