Rivers & Water

Our campaigns seek to prevent pollution and damage to river systems and restore catchments. Previously, our campaign areas have focused on coastal and catchment river systems and the restoration of the Snowy River. Our current campaign areas are focused on the effects of coal mining on catchment rivers and working to minimise these impacts.

TotalEnvironment Centre (TEC) has launched its Don’t Frack The Gas Out Of Us campaign. TEC says Australians must stop the rush to implant a massive gas mining industry in this country, until the community grants a ‘licence to operate’. Take action! [see below in read more]

Coal Mining and Rivers Campaign

A number of major rivers in New South Wales have been cracked, drained and polluted by longwall coal mining. Rare upland swamps, particularly those on the Illawarra Escarpment, have dried up or had their water balanced altered. In almost every case, the groundwater table drops without recovering.

Snowy River Campaign

Snowy River Campaign

A long campaign was waged to save the Snowy River, starved of water by the massive Snowy Hydro Scheme. TEC helped local groups to obtain a new environmental flow regime and restoration program.  Learn more about the regeneration program and recent attempts to remove the only free flow into the River at Mowamba.

State of the River reports
